What are babies placed in when they are born in hospitals?

If it's an incubator, then is it just for premature babies, or is it generally for all babies?

Public Comments

1. all i think

2. Mostly it is premature...or sometimes a baby that might not be as good as it should be...i wouldn't worry too much, the incubators are designed to give the baby optimal living conditions.

3. All babies born in a hospital are placed on a warming table after birth. It is an open air "crib" with a heat lamp above it. Incubators are only used for Preemies or if there is another medical need for one.

4. Icubators are for preemies or ones with health problems and they stay at the NICU. They have a regular clear bassinet for the others and they stay with their mommies.

5. You mean, for general sleeping? Or immediately after birth?

In the birthing room the baby is usually placed right on mom's stomach, then he may be taken to a work-table a few steps away to be checked over and wiped down. (Or this can be done while mom is holding her.)

For general sleeping, hospitals have wheeled bassinets that can be placed right next to mama's bed, or easily wheeled down the hall if baby needs to go the nursery. Or baby can sleep in the bed with mama.

Incubators are for sick/premature babies, who need careful temperature control.

6. They are typically placed on a warming table.

7. The incubator is not all for premature babies it depends on the weight of the baby and if it can cope being outside or not.

I was induced at 38 weeks and although I was full term, my son was incubated for two weeks hooked up to a lot of machines. The incubator also depends on how the birth went and if there were any complications or not.
He weighed 5lbs 9oz and spent a while in NICU.. most babies born healthy are put into the baby nursery or put beside the mothers bed depending on the hospital.
