How do you teach the baby to walk in Baby Pals without her falling down?

In the Nintendo DS game Baby Pals, you teach the baby to do various activities, such as recognize colors and sounds, and teach the baby how to crawl and walk. You have to move a ball to distract the baby to teach her to walk, but I don't even get a chance to try to move the ball before she falls down and cries. Can anyone help me?
