What do you think about infant circumcision?

Personally I think that Infant circumcision should be stoped. It is cruel and painfull for a baby to under-go something like that. I think that the child should be at least 13 or older to have it done, but only if the child wants it. Infant circumcision is taking away the rights of the child as a human. The child has no say so in it. Which they say circumcision is mostly for hygene purposes and that is hard to clean and care for, thats not so true. Im uncut and ive never had a problem with hygene and cleaning, its all just a myth. Im not saying to do away with circumcision, but I do know that its wrong to be done on infants and they not have a say so in it, it should be their choose and have a say so in it.

Public Comments

1. Help the lil fella out. Nip/tuck the extra skin. It'll help his self esteem in the long run. Uncut is so yesterday.

2. Did you know it has differing mortality rates depending on where done? Some babies actually die from it (for no reason) every year.

3. Ok, so we take an infant who has no memory of his circumcision and trade it for a 13 year old who will remember every painful moment? Hmmmm..... I take it you're not a parent. We are asked in the hospital if we would like to have this done. It is elective. Most doctors recommend that the son look like the father. I had both my boys circumcised simply because their father was. I changed them within an hour of the operation and they had no ill effects.

4. I also think it's crap. My son is now 9 uncut and has never had a problem with it either. It's a religious practice that people have tried to keep in tact by claiming that it's healthy. Why don't we as a society cut a woman's breasts off when she's born so that she wont get breast cancer. It's ridiculous.NO people should not still be circumcising in the year 2006. It's barbaric.

5. children don't have no choice in no matter.if he wants his child circumcised then so be it. everyone don't have good personal hygene techniques. his child need to be circumcised because he might develop unforeseen uncleansiness. circumcise your child. you don't need no input about what belongs to you. what is good for one person might not be good for another. do it!!!

6. You have the choice of not having it done to your child. You have been fortunate enough not to have suffered any problems.
The thing is that the child is having it done at the earliest possible time and they numb it with a gel. It is a simple procedure that is done many times in a day.
I knew a man that had to have it done at 11 years of age and it was very pain full for him.
This is an acceptable procedure for the parents to decide for the child just like immunizations.
I think that it is what is done for the benefit of the child, it is not to hurt them in any way.

7. I think it's barbaric and unnecessary. It is not done routinely in Europe and other countries -- teach the child proper hygiene as he grows up and it shouldn't be a problem.

8. I'm circumcised, and it wasn't that painful, because there are pain relievers when I was thirteen. But babies have to go through that actual pain, and there's no way to tell if there is something wrong because the baby can't speak out.

But still, the boy will have no recollection whatsoever of what happened to him, so I guess it's OK. The parents are actually thinking that they're saving their baby from the pain that they will remember.

There are some positive and negatives sides to it, just the way most things are.

P.S.

By the way, it is healthy. And research shows that uncircumcised men actually transmit STD's without having one, just by not cleaning it. It feels freaky to toch the head if you're uncircumcised.

9. It is a hygenic procedure that ensures the child / person does not have to deal with unnessicary health problems later in life. It also makes sex better as the equipment is so much more sensitive.

10. Not always does the hospital cut the baby boy to do a circumcision. The dr's have started to do a ring like method, they put a ring around the foreskin, loosely clamp it & allow the skin to demolish (simular to what they do w/the umbilical cord but not as harsh.) They somewhat do it for health reasons/good hygiene, so there is a purpose. Though some hospitals do use other methods, but rarely do they cut the baby anymore. (my mom works in labor & delivery so..) Its the parents choice so...

11. I think that if parents want to circumcise babies them let them. I will! I like the head of a man to be cut. I think it is best to do it when they are babies. They don't remember it and the pain won't last long. Like people have never been to the dentist!!!! That hurts. You're one of those people that are against whipping children too aren't you? I think that children deserved to get whipped if they don't listen to you the first couple of times.

12. Am glad you never had a problem. But then I doubt you've ever had a bladder infection or kidney infection as a result of bacteria. Painful and requires antibiotics to clear up and too bad then i no antibiotics available for gradually the infection gets worse and it';ll; be a really bad thing to happen. If all little boys came from loving homes and were taught hygiene then there would not be the necessity but having been in foster care for many years a lot of children are neglected and grow up dirty and if they aren't taught to wash hans-doubt hey are taught to clean themselves there. And what of countries where antibiotics are not readily available-the risk is too grave. Since it is done not long after birth and in a hospital and the area is also numbed it is not a life trauma for the child and no preceding fear and dread. Imagine a child pressured to do(Reality is that children have few rights and usually the will of the parents dictates what is done. The fear, the dread- and since there is MUCH MORE to Cut there will also be MORE PAIN---the nerves,Brain are also much more developed than in a infant to feel pain and having it done at a later age could be a life traumatic act. The memory of the pain could create problems in having a complete relationship. Also it makes relations more pleasurable

13. Ok.

Everyone had their say?

Now, the facts...

If parents want to have their sons circumcised due to religious or medical reasons, that is their God-given right and no one here (whether on Y!A or outside) has the right to force a parent to do otherwise. We can tell them or advise them about the pros and cons of this matter but the final say lies with them.

Personally, a male infant or child should be circumcised for hygenic purposes. I'm cut and clean and I haven't experienced any problems from it.

Note:

I'm not bashing anyone's opinion here, ok? Everyone's has something to say and I just added my two cents'.

Peace.

14. would you wnat to have a circumcision done when your 13????? I don't think so. Do it when noone will remember it. I am glad i was done when i was born i couldn't imagine having it done later on in life. i know it hurts the babies but i myself am glad that i didn't have to go through it when i would remember it.

15. I elected to not have the circumcision done on my son when he was born for many reasons. 1) its an uncessary procedure 2) the insurance wouldn't pay for one even if I wanted him to get it 3) I actually work in a hospital in the pharmacy and delivered meds to the nursery one time and as I was walking out, a doctor was preping a baby for a circumcision. I got way down the end of the hallway and this baby let out the most blood curdling scream I had ever heard in my life. It sent chills through me. I have not nor will I ever forget that scream. I know they use emla cream to numb the area but obviously its not enough cause this baby still felt it. I certainly don't want to do that to my son. 4) Statistics show that 50% of kids these days don't get it done so its not like when they are other kids in the shower at school that he will be singled out for looking different. 5) as long as you clean the area regularly then theres no chance for infection

just my 2 cents

16. Its Barbaric

17. Totally the parents decision. I think they should when they are a baby so that they have no memory what so ever of it. Who would want a circumcision when they are 13! OUCH! It helps from infection and looks way cleaner. I say it is totally ok for docs to do that and like i said it is totally up to the parents! there really is no downside to it.

18. Circumcision is UN-necessary, theres no point in it.

19. The terrible part of it is that they don't inject with Lidocaine or Marcaine to spare the infant the terrible pain. Creams are not enough. the second evil in it is that the child is forced against his will. He should be allowed to decide for himself - IT"S HIS BODY. circumcision later in life is not so bad. Mine was at 35 and I didn't whimper or scream or complain. The Marcaine made me numb well into the midnight hours on that day.

circumcision is done on baby boys as a SEXUAL ARTIFACT - to make their glans like amushroom, to emphasize it - to make the penis more of a sexual tool, to make the boys more AWARE of their penis throughout life. And they cut boys cause society wants to please the ladies - basically - so they do this as a fashion & a stylistic device. they do this to please the women according to what they believe to be ladies' preferences in their consorts. It's not about hygiene, it never has been.

Still, I feel it's a very SEXY & HOT thing to do. Makes the penis more handsome, more modern, neat & defined looking. less of an elephant's trunk & more of a TOOL which can drill some holes in someone. I rest my case.

20. It is a horrible thing to do to a baby! And why would he want to do it at 13 or ever? It is genital mutilation, removing a healthy and functional body part because somebody back 150 years ago thought it was more hygienic (false) or would stop mastrubation (also false).

Fortunately circumcision is now becoming largely a historical quirk except where it is a religious rite. Few informed parents are doing it to their babies anymore, although the ignorant will continue with outmoded 20th Century procedures for a few more years.

Circumcision cuts way down on sexual pleasure for the poor men who have had it done and their partners. I can't believe how shallow someone has to be to want part of a man's penis to be chopped off so it looks nicer! Well, actually, folks, it looks kind of incomplete and pathetic if you know what it's SUPPOSED to look like!

I pity men whose parents made this unwise choice for them. They have to live with it and cope the best they can. But that is no reason to do the same terrible thing to their own sons. Are Daddy and his little boy going to be comparing their equipment? At a very young age the child isn't going to notice anyway, as there are so many other differences between the adult penis and juvenile penis. Are you going to wag it around in front of your teenager? Gheesh! Keep it in your pants around the kids, guys!

21. I agree with you but cannot pus my believes on someone else. My son is intact and if he wishes to have it done he has that choice I compare this practice with that of a mole when its removed for cosmetic reasons bc it "MIGHT" become canserous
