What is the proper pronoun to describe an infant?

For example, do you call an infant "it"?
To clarify, I am using an analogy involving an infant for an application.
Also, is it wrong to say "it" when referring to an infant?

1. him or her, if gender is known. Otherwise say "your baby" , or "the baby". Try to avoid "it".

I have definitely said "it" before, and it just sounds so harsh and impersonal, so i regretted saying "it" even tho it was by mistake.

2. I agree with the suggestions of the first answerer. Also she and he, if gender known. You can also add 'the child' and 'the newborn.'
