How long should a newborn eat in one feeding when nursing?

My son is 4 days old. Normal for a newborn he still sleeps a lot. When he does wake up he is only nursing for about 10 minutes before falling back to sleep. I'm concerned he's not eating enough. How long should he be feeding?

1. if your son isnt crying and falling asleep peacefully he is getting his little tummy full..
dont worry theres no time limit on how long a baby should eat..

2. Feedings are different depending on the baby - some can feed for 10 minutes and some can feed up to an hour :) nothing to worry about, he will be ok.

3. Some kids are fast and don't need a lot of boob time to get what they need, as long as he is gaining weight the way he is suppose to, then he is fine.

We worry so much about out little babies, it's normal and its ok for you to worry about this, also, if you are not sure about something, you can call your doctor or the lactation consultant at the hospital you gave birth.

Good luck!

4. At 4 days your milk probably isn't in yet, and colostrum is made in very small amounts. As long as he's nursing frequently (every couple of hours) and wetting diapers (he should have had 4 wet ones today) 5-10 minutes is ample.

In the next couple of days he'll likely become more wakeful and want to nurse longer and more often.
