What is it if my newborn has yellow discharge in eye?

I am bring my newborn to the doctors this upcoming morning. But my two week old has yellow gunk coming out of her left eye all the time, more so noticeable when she wakes to breast feed's. I have cleared it with a q-tip with water and also noticed her eye (where the white part is) is red. Does anyone know what this could be and what I can do to help her until the doctors?
P.S It's a little swollen as well but the swelling is going down.

1. Use a clean, wet, warm cloth. Leave it on for about ten minutes. You could do this once an hour or so. You could also use a warm compress for longer bouts of time. Discharge of the eyes can be a little bit of nothing, really.. the doctor may prescribe some eye drops and that will be that.. however, worst case scenaril, it could be an infection. So make sure you mame it to the doctor in the morning; i wouldn't wait much longwr than tomorrow. (:

2. Sounds like conjunctivits whish is highly contageous. You are right to take her to the doctors. Until then use a warm face cloth soaked in saline solution (warm water with salt added). Wipe away the crusts and wash around the eye lids with it. It may help somewhat but she will need propper ointment from the doctor. Failing that, it could be a blocker tear duct that has become infected. Either way, the doctor will sort it out.

3. It sound like conjunctivitis to me. My son had this when he was younger and it was treated with eye drops. I would get it looked into just to be on the safe side, because sometimes conjunctivitis can cause the eye to stick.
If it's not conjunctivitis, could be just sleep.

All the best
