What is the proper way to hold a newborn baby?
My cousin just had a baby Wednesday and I get to see her tomorrow. I have always found it difficult to hold newborns because they are so small and fragile. What is the proper way to hold a newborn baby?

1. There are several different techniques. When you go to visit, just simply ask your cousin to show you which hold is most comfortable. "Cradling" them is what most people feel comfortable doing and is probably one of the safest holds.

2. just be sure to support the head, they're floppy, the rest, whatever feels natural :)
3. shove your pointer and middle finger in its nostrils... and lift.
4. the most proper way to hold a baby is to cradle it's body in your arms and make sure that the head rest on your elbow joint so that the head will have support. it comes very natural and if you are uncomfortable then sit with the baby first
5. The proper way to hold a newborn is to put her in my arms! Kidding. Cradle is the term to remember & support the head. Babies have distinct preferences in how they want to be held. You won't know unless you ask or try for the first time. Support the head and hold gently. You'll be fine.

7. If you're nervous about it, make sure you're sitting down and have your cousin hand her to you. Most people generally hold babies like this (and sorry for the goofy picture...I have no idea who this guy is--I just did a random search, lol): http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Dholding%2Ba%2Bbaby%26ei%3DUTF-8%26fr%3Dhp-psnb%26fr2%3Dtab-web&w=333&h=500&imgurl=static.flickr.com%2F70%2F164527001_00d1f56947.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flickr.com%2Fphotos%2Fsengster%2F164527001%2F&size=124k&name=Left+holding+the...&p=holding+a+baby&oid=453098e1b3c9946c&fr2=tab-web&fusr=charcoalscur...&no=12&tt=142568&sigr=11gahmvn5&sigi=11db9h19e&sigb=12tn55nnk
And make sure you wash your hands before picking her up!
8. Don't be scared they are not as fragile as most people think. With newborns you do need to support the head and neck because the neck muscles have not yet developed. Cradle is the most popular (baby doll hold) as it's mother how it likes to be held or how she wants you to hold it
